Root Out MacDill Corruption

Regarding the investigations of financial irregularities at MacDill's SoCom:

As a veteran and former defense contractor working for U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, I find the current Special Operations Command investigations truly alarming.

With controversy still swirling over the material preparedness of our forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the perpetual underfunding of the Department of Veterans Affairs, it is vital that every tax dollar spent on defense contracting is used as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Our veterans need care, our combat troops need adequate protective gear, and the American people deserve oversight and accountability, particularly when dealing with multimillion-dollar contracts.

Working for U.S. Central Command, I learned that our commanders need broad authority, not added bureaucracy, to fulfill their role as protectors of American freedom and liberty. However, we cannot allow blank checks and "good-ol'-boy" deals to hijack American tax dollars.

If the allegations of bribery, contract fixing and shady financial transactions are found to be true, the administration has failed American veterans, servicemembers and citizens.

Our military is the best in the world. Our soldiers are highly trained and they are held accountable if mistakes are made. The same must be true for colonels, commanders and contractors.

Americans will stand behind their troops 100 percent. Preferential treatment of contractors and bribes cannot be allowed to undermine them.

We must not let the culture of corruption in Washington trickle down to our operation and command centers here in Florida. We need accountability for all, from the top down and the bottom up.
